Teigh, Rutland

When a family chose to convert the derelict barns beside their home into a contemporary rural residence, it became clear that the surrounding landscape needed to anchor and soften the new architecture.
At the front of the property, the design incorporates a sweeping, tree-lined driveway leading to the garages and continuing on to the front door. New borders on either side of the drive create a strong sense of arrival, while yew spheres set within the gravel approach introduce a subtle formality.
To the side of the entrance, a courtyard-inspired front garden extends from the living room. The homeowners wanted this space to feel more structured and formal, particularly when viewed from the upper floors of the house. Stone pavers set into the lawn form a strong linear pattern, carefully aligned with the doors that open onto the garden, reinforcing the sense of order and symmetry.
MORE PLANS AND DRAWINGS

At the rear of the house, a modern open-plan extension forms the heart of the home. From here, uninterrupted views stretch across the garden and into the surrounding fields beyond. A key principle of the design was to preserve these open views while using the garden to strengthen the connection between the house and the countryside. Levels were subtly reworked to create the impression of the garden gently unfolding from the house into the wider landscape, with multiple seating areas positioned to enjoy the changing countryside views throughout the day.
