Aldwincle, Northamptonshire

Surrounded by uninterrupted countryside views, this farmhouse and its accompanying stables are currently being transformed, with the stable block reimagined as part of the family home.
The proposed design takes what was once an expansive, purely functional space with minimal planting and reshapes it into a garden that anchors the house within the landscape, while celebrating the unique character of the property.
At the heart of the U-shaped buildings, the front courtyard required a complete transformation from a large, open block-paved area into an inviting and welcoming entrance and front garden. The design breaks down the scale of the space into distinct areas, naturally guiding visitors from the driveway to the front door along a gravel pathway. Strips of stone pavers align with the building’s windows, introducing rhythm, definition, and structure among softer pockets of planting set within the gravel.

The homeowners were also keen to make the most of the south-facing aspect by creating a garden suitable for outdoor dining directly off the kitchen. Enclosed by hedging to provide separation from the driveway and entrance, this garden respects the traditional character of the farmhouse, while also introducing a sense of charm and romance with rose-clad archways and generously planted borders. A pathway continues from the front garden to an existing circular sunken fire pit, hugged by borders of countryside-inspired planting and multi-stem trees.
