Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire

This family garden needed a more welcoming layout - one that felt softer, more inviting, and clearly defined.
The brief was to create a space where the family could enjoy spending time together, whether relaxing while watching the children play on the lawn or sharing evenings in the hot tub.
Although the original terrace was an ideal size for entertaining, it dominated the rear of the house and lacked planting to soften its edges or add seasonal interest. To the side of the property, the clients were keen to transform an underused lawn into a dedicated area for a hot tub, as well as introduce an additional seating space to make the most of the evening sun.
The new design divides the garden into three connected areas, each with its own character, yet linked through a cohesive palette of materials and repeated planting. Closest to the house, a generous covered dining terrace now flows from the kitchen. New borders between the terrace and the lawn help soften the space, creating a more intimate atmosphere.
PLANS AND DRAWINGS

Further into the garden, a relaxed seating area is nestled between planting, offering a comfortable spot to unwind while still keeping an eye on children playing nearby. The once-unused lawn has been transformed into a secluded garden retreat. A hot tub is now set within a gravel garden, framed by circular corten steel planters filled with herbs. Over time, the newly planted hornbeam hedge will mature to enclose the space, creating a private and tranquil escape away from the house.
